Young Jamaican Joey Issa is on the ball

Those who have been expressing concern of late about the future of this country can take heart. Of late I too have become concerned about the younger members of society. Recent experiences with some of the under-30s who exhibited so much greed, selfishness and disloyalty, left me drained and worried for Jamaica.

The on Sunday, October 23, I was invited to St. Mary by members of Kiwanis Club. Accompanied by a friend I journeyed to Boscobel in the cool mid-morning.

The fine Couples property was being given a facelift and workmen were stripping paint and getting their job done despite the fact that it was a Sunday.

JC-1010-Joey-Issa-meets-Prime-Minister-of-the-Bahamas-Hubert-Ingraham-1994-as-proud-father-John-Issa-looks-on1Enter young Joey Issa, manager of the hotel. High-energy, courteous, dynamic and cocksure. The 27-year-old had taken on the task of general manger with gusto, he had turned things around and was making piles of money for his family in very short time. His latest challenge is to make the venerable Sans Souci property into a successful venture. It has been a revenue-losing venture for 20 years; young Joe aims to reverse that position in the shortest possible time.

As he took us on a whirlwind tour of the property he was bubbling with excitement about the many changes he had in mind. I was impressed.

Civic pride

Shortly after 1:00 o’clock we were assembled for the 23rd anniversary awards and installation luncheon of the Kiwanis Club of St. Mary. The group included several young men, many I estimate to be shy of 30. These were serious men. They were talking development and civic pride.

One element that is always present in successful communities is strong business leadership. In St. Mary, that leadership is determined to spike a boom.

Noted more for its fine-quality nutmegs and bananas, St. Mary is not overrun by natural resources; but the parish is teeming with young, vibrant professionals who frequently talk about big goals.

For 1992/93, past president Michael Wilson reported that the Club’s activities ran the gamut of building an indigents’ home, finding a home for an orphan boy, spearheading clean-up of the Paggee Beach and giving medical supplies to the Port Maria Hospital Children’s Ward.

The St. Mary police traffic department was even given tyres!

For the first time, the club was making a presentation of the L.B. Creary Memorial award in memory of a founding member of the club, Luneville Creary.

His sons, Don and Richard, and his widow though that Joey Issa deserved the award for having done the most during the past year to assist the club in its attempt to help the less fortunate in the parish.

Don Creary, brawny and talented, had earned the respect of his colleagues for raising some $75,000 and was judged Kiwanian of the Year.

The incoming president of the club, Winston Richardson, will continue to have the support of the Crearys, young men like Robert Montague, Paul Lindo and Michael Wilson.

And the Chamber of Commerce had better watch out for this group of determined young men are set on forming a coalition between business and civic leaders for the development of their community, parish and ultimately their country.

  1. Kiwanis campaign helping to stamp out tetanus
    BY MAMI MARUKO

Around the world, a baby dies every nine minutes from tetanus.

To counter this, the international volunteer organization Kiwanis is seeking the complete elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus, as the life-threatening disease still prevails in many developing countries.

Kiwanis, through its global campaign called “The Eliminate Project,” has been aiming since 2010 to provide vaccinations to women in 40 countries. Kiwanis clubs are hoping to raise $110 million through fundraising events by next year.

The project is being run in conjunction with UNICEF, the United Nations’ children’s fund.

  2. UNICEF joins forces with global volunteer corps Kiwanis to eliminate tetanus

25 June 2010 – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the global volunteer network Kiwanis International have announced a new partnership to eradicate tetanus in women and children worldwide.

Known as “The Eliminate Project,” the initiative will mobilize nearly 600,000 Kiwanis volunteers to help raise resources and awareness about maternal and neonatal tetanus, UNICEF noted in a news release.

The aim is to raise $110 million over the next five years to provide help and immunization to women and children in countries where the disease is most prevalent.

“This partnership with Kiwanis International will give us the tools we need to save the lives of women and children who desperately need our help,” said Nicholas K. Alipui, UNICEF Director of Programmes.

(L-R) CREARY… persons know my work, they know my performance. PERALTO… JLP officials admitted that he had not performed in a manner that was expected of him

THERE are several hills in the constituency of South East St Mary, and new Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate Richard Creary knows it will be difficult to reach the top of them all.

One such is the climb to wiping away the deficit of popular support left by his underperforming member of parliament and colleague Tarn Peralto, whom he will replace in the next general election, expected within weeks.

    Kimani Robinson – File

Whenever something new comes along people tend to flock to it like a moth to a flame.

Friday night was no different as scores of Jamaica’s social elite partied hard into the early Saturday morning at Kingston’s newest high-brow setting, the Plush nightclub on Trinidad Terrace.

They also consumed large volumes of some of the world’s finest spirit brands including Johnnie Walker Gold label, Ciroc vodka, Tanqueray gin and Tequila Don Julio that constitute Diageo’s reserve brands which will be a feature of the nightclub.

Several hours earlier at the Pure Lounge, two flights of stairs below, guests including members of the media danced and mingled as disco beats from the 1980s thumped from hidden speakers

It was a capacity crowd, which crammed Natures Way Park in Buff Bay, Portland, to celebrate Daryl Vaz’s birthday bash.

The man, who is dubbed the ‘bulldozer’, or ‘Mr fix’ it by others, was celebrating his birthday, decided to do so in the constituency of West Portland – as a mark of respect and thanks to the electorate, which supported him in the general election of 2007.

“I just saw it necessary to present the people of West Portland with the perfect gift for Christmas,” he said. “Many have not had the opportunity to see top reggae performers, unless they visit stage shows. I deliberately choose Portland instead of an all-inclusive location, which would have attracted only the rich and famous.”

  6. Children’s Ward Gets Make-Over By St. Mary Parish Council
On Monday May 23, the St. Mary Parish Council took on a mammoth task for its Labour Day Project. The organization, as its official project, took on the renovation of the Port Maria Hospital Children’s Ward.

Director of Administration at the Council, Myrnel Grant, says that despite the great amount of work at hand, “The Port Maria Hospital Children’s Ward was chosen as it conforms to the national [Labour Day] theme: It Takes a Village to Raise a Child”.

One corporate entity has joined the community effort in aid of children. Triple play digital provider Flow donated $50,000 to the St. Mary Parish Council for work to be carried out at the children’s ward. Public Relations Manager at Flow, Denise Williams, says her entity which began operations in Jamaica five years ago is pleased to partner with the Council.

  7. A little hospital doing big things
    BY HG HELPS Editor-at-Large helpsh@jamaicaobserver.com

    Sunday, January 17, 2010

DR Nadine Bourg perhaps summed it up best: “It is a humble little hospital, in a small community, doing great things.” Head anaesthesiologist Dr Bourg was referring to her medical institution of employment, the Annotto Bay Hospital, located in South East St Mary, a 45-minute drive heading east from Constant Spring in upper St Andrew.

The hospital, founded in 1867 by Dr John Pringle as a medical post for workers, has grown at a rapid pace to emerge as one of the leading institutions of patient care islandwide.

  8. Urgent doctor’s visit for Capleton – Deejay was set to hand over proceeds from annual show

    Christopher Serju, STAR Writer

An emergency visit to the doctor on Tuesday afternoon prevented international recording artiste Capleton from making a planned appearance at the St Mary Infirmary, which received $100,000 from the proceeds of the annual ‘St Mary Mi Come From’ hosted by the ‘Fireman’ each August in the parish of his birth. Proceeds from the very popular event usually go towards a charitable cause in St Mary.

The artiste born Clifton Bailey was en route to the institution when he developed abdominal pains and was rushed to a private doctor. Before presenting the cheque, manager Claudette Kemp gave the assurance that Capleton was okay and called the deejay, who addressed the presentation ceremony via speaker phone.

There are a lot of people in the financial community who have reason to be grateful to Robert Montague – a small army of investment bankers, stockbrokers, accountants and lawyers enriched themselves on the back of his career. He also fuelled the ‘corporate governance’ industry.

Ten years ago, Montague’s spectacular business rise with his container leasing company Tiphook – which shot from nowhere to a market value of £750 million in just 16 years – gave him a Midas-touch reputation in the City; to friends and associates, he was generous and expansive, and they shared in all the trappings of his success – weekends at his 1,300-acre estate in Oxfordshire, the executive jet, a 140ft yacht, the best tables in the best restaurants and extravagant foreign holidays.

The hedge purchased by Jamaica last year at a strike price of US$66 has come in for criticism because oil prices are currently falling, and analysts are predicting further decreases this year.
